The Program Details

A hands on real world experience  to put on your resume and in your portfolio. Participants will visually develop an intellectual property start-to-finish (albeit in the fashion of a ‘sampler platter.')  They will be assigned an intellectual property with all story components that lend themselves to feature film—simply put, a property a major studio like Disney, Dreamworks, PDI, Pixar, Blue Sky or Laika is likely to green light for development.

Meet Your Visual Development Master

DOMINICK DOMINGO is a Disney Feature Animation veteran who spent the ‘90s riding the wave of the ‘Animation Renaissance’ in both LA and Paris, painting backgrounds and producing Visual Development art for The Lion King, Pocahontas, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Tarzan, Little Match Girl and One By One. In the years since, he founded the Entertainment Arts track at his alma mater, Art Center, where he amassed twenty-plus years of classroom experience. He continued freelancing for major companies in gaming, Feature and TV Animation (both 2D and CG) while developing his own intellectual properties.

His award winning live-action films garnered original screenplay credits, inspiring Dominick to put his lifelong love of writing on the front burner. His short stories and creative nonfiction essays have won awards (most recently the Solas Award, Craft Literary and Writer’s Digest) and been published in anthologies. His YA trilogy The Nameless Prince, published through Twilight Times books, maintains five stars on B & N and Amazon, touching hearts the world over.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROGRAM?

Story Driven Art Direction

In Entertainment, there is much talk of the role of ‘story’ in the Visual Development process. For many, however, it remains an elusive buzzword. In very pragmatic terms, this class illuminates how Western Storytelling Structure becomes Art Direction in practice, not just theory. How literary themes are visually represented by the artist, lending resonance to the written word in the way only an artist can. Over 14-weeks, students will bring a story to life, from blue sky concepts to a cohesive, production-ready style guide.

Practical, Real Experience

In designing all assets for production (props/vehicles/weapons, character, environment, and story beats) students gain practical experience identifying what’s universal in story, while also finding their own personal connection to it in a way that nurtures their unique voice and flair!

Get Seen

Get your work seen and recommended. The program culminates with an industry showcase  held at the prestigious Creative Talent Network Animation Expo (CTNX 2022) Nov 17-20, 2022 in the animation capital of the world - Burbank CA.  (Ticket to the event  is included)

Check out this short introduction video with Dominick.

Participants will LEARN:

  • Laterally explore solutions for all assets in the CG Pipeline: character, props/vehicles/weapons, environments and moment paintings/story beats (to serve as color/texture callouts or lighting keys.)

  • Follow up their lateral (or ‘blue sky’) exploration by honing final designs. Fourteen weeks of exploration will culminate in the Final Presentation of a solid art direction scheme that could theoretically be compiled as a Style Guide and disseminated to a crew of production artists.

  • Produce a title treatment and graphic design sensibility for the I.P. that captures the essence of their project and governs their final presentation, a verbal art direction pitch.

  • Learn to generate inspired designs, while also rendering form dimensionally, in a way modelers can understand.

  • Learn a linear process of lateral exploration and honing (based on feedback) in order to arrive at final designs

  • Learn the Visual Development process as it occurs in the studio system.

  • Learn to articulate their own creative processes and communicate with other artists, Art Directors, Production Designers, or Directors.

  • Gain a great deal of mileage toward refining their own authentic voice and sensibility in the context of Entertainment.

  • Take a theoretical understanding of the buzzword ‘story’ and its importance to art direction, and experience how thematic content literally becomes Art Direction in a practical way.

  • Private mentorship also available.  Not part of class.

This program has three main elements that help you achieve your goals.

Element 1

Weekly, in-person meetups at CTN Studio, where you learn to bring a story to life visually by honoring its thematic content.

Element 2

Learn a visual development process of Lateral Exploration followed by honing Finalized Designs.

Element 3

Gain real world experience working with a team to put on your resume and in your portfolio.  Use this experience has a referral for job interviews.

Who is this opportunity for?

CREATE YOUR OWN VOICE

Visual development artists that seek to nurture the creative process and develop their personal voice and flair.

UPGRADE YOUR PORTFOLIO

This program is meant to combine all foundational skills and solidify a strong  voice for a portfolio.

ADD STORY TO YOUR WORK

Professionals wishing to learn more about story and how it can inform and empower their work, who may have missed out on the importance of story in school.

WHAT STORY DO YOU WANT TO TELL?

Artists with a certain level of technical skill who have not yet had the opportunity to apply their skill set to the ‘why’ aspect of their craft: what they have to say.

SET YOURSELF APART

Artists with technique who wish to cultivate their unique 'art director' voice and set themselves apart in design and style.

WHO WILL BENEFIT MOST

Artists with a degree of foundation will benefit most from this program; basic skills like draftsmanship, composition, light logic, rendering, and color theory can then be applied as needed and focus can be more on developing art direction style for the project and honing personal voice and flair with each design.

Artists will be asked for examples of their work after they sign up.
