Each week, this class will delve into a different film, using its visuals and storytelling techniques as inspiration for multimedia studies. Students will explore various mediums—such as pencil, ink, watercolor, or digital tools—gaining insights into how movies can enrich their artistic vocabulary. From the dramatic lighting of noir films to the dynamic compositions of action blockbusters, this class will help students draw inspiration, build visual literacy, and experiment with new techniques while enjoying the magic of cinema.

Are you an independent filmmaker or storyboard artist eager to enjoy yourself while learning the craft of movie-making? "Drawing from Film" offers you a casual, comprehensive, hands-on experience designed to immerse you in the art of cinematic storytelling. Led by acclaimed filmmaker/Visual Development John Mahoney, this experience invites you to dissect, analyze, and draw inspiration from a curated selection of films.
"We will study scenes from master films such as: Gladiator, Gone With the Wind, Bambi, The Secret of Nimh, Moulin Rouge, Yellow Submarine, Gravity, Alien, Fury Road, and many more. Build your story-boarding skills will creating portfolio worthy images in this fun filled experience."

Is there any advice you can give for an aspiring animation student or artist trying to break into the business? Learn how to draw!!! Follow your impulses. Study and copy the masters. Keep challenging yourself and just have fun every day. Don’t worry about the future too much, just concentrate on where you are and enjoy the small moments. Eventually, all that fun will lead to a career. If you learn something of value, pass it along to the next person. The more positive energy you put out there, the more positive your life and the people around you will be. Don’t be shy, get your stuff out there!!!
